Vivian Maier
Vivian Maier
Vivian Maier is a French born amateur photographer whose street photography was discovered at an auction in Chicago. Vivian's images are of scenes from the streets of Chicago and New York City in the 1959's to 1960's. Each image is a view of the time period. Each image is a view of an average day's stroll on a city street.
Vivian came to the United States as a child. She worked in a sweatshop in New York and as a nanny in Chicago. The children she raised later described her as:
"She was a Socialist, a Feminist, a movie critic, and a tell-it-like-it-is type of person. She learned English by going to theaters, which she loved. She wore a men's jacket, men's shoes, and a large hat most of the time. She was constantly taking pictures, which she didn't show anyone."
